My first!

Firsts are something to cherish, your first kiss, your first boyfriend, the first time you taste the sweet melt in your mouth pleasure of fine chocolate. So it was no surprise that although I had baked for years, my first birthday cake would be special and even more so because it was made for my special little girl. When I sat down to think of what to bake, the one thing I knew was that it had to be different. I couldn't stand the idea of just a plain vanilla or chocolate cake. Now, before you start typing away telling me how great those two flavours are, I want you all to understand I love both. However I just wanted something different. I started thinking of all the cakes I loved and my mother came to mind. She has been making one of the most simple but delicious orange cakes I have ever tasted, for years. So I ran with it! First I made a miniature version as I had never worked with fondant and wanted to test it out. I looked up recipes for fondant found and made it, and the cake complete with Minnie ears. My daughter loved it. Of course that doesn't say much since kids will eat anything sweet. I didn't however care for the butter cream frosting that i had used, so on the big b-day cake I was lucky enough to steal my mother in laws amazing cream cheese frosting. Maxxine ended up with Grandma Magalhaes' (Vovo) cake, Grandma Steele's (GG) frosting and mommies decor. I also decided to swap the fondant Minnie ears, that would have no doubt ended in the garbage, for a Minnie car that Maxx can keep as a memory. Every one seemed to love the cake and once all was said and done all I could think of was what to make next!!! The picture in this post is of the small trial version it was a little rough but testing out the cake and fondant was very worth it and saved me a lot of time when making the actual cake. The final cake was in the pic in my first post. If anyone is interested in the orange cake recipe or any others feel free to comment.
